Spay and Neuter
Spaying is the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus; neutering is the surgical removal of the testes. The reasons for spaying and neutering are multiple and important.
Moral reasons for spaying/neutering:
Dogs and cats are prolific reproducers and unfortunately in our society there are more cats and dogs than there are humans to provide good homes for them. If you have any doubts of this you need only to visit any shelter or humane society. Spaying and neutering lowers aggression and the tendency to roam and generally makes cats and dogs better pets.
Medical reasons for spaying/neutering:
Mammary cancer risk is nearly completely eliminated by spaying at a young age. Spaying completely prevents pyometra, a deadly infection of the uterus. Spaying prevents unwanted pregnancies and the need for C-sections.
Neutering prevents prostatitis, a painful and debilitating infection of the prostate. Neutering prevents testicular cancer, perianal fistulas, and perianal hernias. All of these diseases are very difficult and expensive to treat medically.
Animal Health Care Denver is a PRO spay and neuter clinic.
We know that spaying and neutering prevents MANY disease conditions and is the right choice for the majority of American dogs. In general, we require all of our patients to be spayed/neutered by the age of 2 years.
